Say goodbye to perusing the lobby of your optometrist’s office for the perfect frames. It’s time to broaden your eyewear horizons and find some high-quality, beautifully designed, trendy specs from the comfort of your own home. A-hem, online. The best part? Loving your new look. The second best part? You can (and you must!) use your pre-taxed dollars to buy frames online if you partake in an FSA or HSA. Understandably, questions abound. How do you know what size glasses to buy? What if they don’t end up matching your style? What if you buy them and they don’t fit, or they’re not what you had in mind? Worry not! We’ve made the online buying process simple and rather fun if you ask us, so finding the perfect frames is zero stress and leaves ample time for fantasizing about all of the compliments you’re going to get on your new frames.

Let’s get the technical part out of the way. Before you get started, what you’ll need is two measurements and it will only take you two shakes to get them done. Here’s how to measure your head and your pupillary distance. Grab that tape measure from your sewing table — or out of that sewing kit your mother gave you when you got your first desk job. You also might want to open your Notes app for this — or break out a fountain pen and notepad if you’re fancy.

Head measurements
First, you’ll want to measure the width of your head. Hold a tape measure right under your eyes, temple-to-temple. Take note of what that measurement is in millimeters. It’s okay if your measurement isn’t exact — you just want a ballpark. This number will fall into one of three categories:

Less than 130mm — Narrow
130mm to 139mm — Average
More than 140mm — Wide

No need to write down your specific measurement, just the category you fall into.

Pupillary distance measurement
Your pupillary distance is the distance between your pupils and is important to make sure your prescription is placed correctly in the lenses. There are two ways to get this measurement. If your optometrist has put a number in the PD field of your prescription, you’re all set! If not, don’t worry, we’ve prepared for this. We’ve put together a step-by-step guide to measure your pupillary distance easily. All you’ll need is a mirror and the downloadable printout. Once you have those two measurements, you’re good to move on to the fun part —finding the right style for you.

1. How do I Choose a Style?

Do you want something chic and classic à la Marilyn Monroe? Maybe something bookish and bold like Eugene or Dan Levy? Or are you looking for something a little more wackadoodle that would give Elton John a run for his money? Whatever tickles your fancy, we can pretty much promise you we’ve designed it. Did we mention we design all of our own frames? Not to sound braggadocious, but we much prefer the incredible looks our designers create and their taste in high-quality materials and we thought you might too. Anyway, if you want to dive right in and let your personal style guide you, we fully support that. If you want a little guidance, take our style quiz to help narrow it down. And, if your go-to style changes like the weather, by all means, pick out a couple. We wouldn’t blame you.

You do not need to hop in the car and drive to one of our locations to find out which pair is the one. You can try on many of our frames from your couch or chaise lounge with our virtual try-on feature. All you need is your phone or iPad and you’re set — pants optional. Browse our selection, and have at. We strongly encourage you to try new things. Red cat eye? Go for it. Granny chic hexagons? Please do! Wire frames? Steve Jobs would be so proud. Don’t be shy, you’re the only one here.

4. What if I Need Style Help?

If you just can’t seem to make up your mind, schedule a virtual styling session with one of our stylists. You’ll meet them over Zoom and once they get a good sense of what you’re looking for, they’ll hand-select a few styles that match your descriptions. If you have a big event coming up, like a wedding or an interview, that you want your new frames to complement, please do not hold back. We’ll help you find the perfect pairing for any occasion.
